Orchids have two types of growth: sympodial, with lateral shoots, and monopodial,
with terminal growth in a single axis.
In many sympodial orchids, the stem may consist of a horizontal portion, the
rhizome, and a thickened vertical portion, the pseudobulb. In monopodial orchids,
the stem is elongated, with no rhizome or pseudobulbs.
