FRUIT AND SEEDS

An orchid fruit contains one million seeds. However, only a very small fraction of these will germinate and few individuals will actually reach the adult phase.
Orchid seeds are within the smallest existing. Their very small size and weight allows them to be easier dispersed by the wind, sometimes over great distances. In contrast to the seeds of other plants, they have no nourishing tissues (endosperm and cotyledons) to provide the energy used in the early phases of germination. Since the nourishing tissue is absent, energy is provided by certain fungi that live in symbiotic association with orchids.
