According to the rules of botanical nomenclature, the name of the family
must be written in Latin: Orchidaceae (from the greek orchis).
The term Orchis, that means testicles, was used for the first time to describe
a plant by Theophrastus (ca. 372 - 287 BC), a greek philosopher, disciple
of Aristotle. Theophrastus compared the tuberous roots of some mediterranean
orchids to human testicles. For this reason, from the Middle Age to our times,
aphrodisiac properties are attributed to orchids.
