Origin
The Casa dos Pilões used to be part of the Royal Gunpowder Factory from the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. The Gunpowder Factory had a great importance in the security of the Brazilian Empire, as it was responsible for the production of explosives to supply the Brazilian market. It was in the Oficina do Moinho dos Pilões that the most dangerous step of the explosive production (the powder compacting) took place.
After its extinction, in 1831, the building had several repairs and uses, among which, house and laboratory of Dr. João Geraldo Kuhlmann and, after his death, the Kuhlmann Museum.
In 1984, it was confirmed the existence of an archeological park in the Oficina do Moinho de Pilões. The place was named Archeological Park-Museum Casa dos Pilões because of these discoveries. There is a permanent exhibition with pieces found in archeological excavation and a miniature of the old building simulating its function.
