Among all the institutions created during the colonial period, The Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro holds one of the most important live collections of native and exotic plants, most of them rare and therefore of great value. Being a cultivation, experimentation and preservation area, the Botanical Garden is essentially a Unit of Conservation ex-situ. Its living collection has around 8.000 vegetal specimens planted in Arboreto , distributed in more than 200 botanical families.
Some of the species from the living collection are cultivated in Greenhouses. These places are especially prepared to acclimatize the plants when they are cultivated out of their natural habitat.
