During the administration of Dr. Barbosa
Rodrigues, which began in 1890, the first greenhouse at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical
Gardens was built. It was made out of wood and shaped as an octagon. In the
1930's, the greenhouse was remodelled in glass and iron, similar to the style
of the English glasshouses. Today the Orchidarium includes the glasshouse and
the whole area that surrounds it, with a nursery with over 3000 orchid vases.
The Orchidarium is open to the public everyday from 8 to 5pm.
